Augusta National Golf Course Etiquette

The Masters Tournament is unlike any other sporting event in the world. It is a privilege to enter the hallowed grounds of this former nursery and with that privilege comes certain responsibilities. Please read these guidelines carefully and understand them before you enter the course.

Badges
The daily use of a Masters Badge is a privilege. The Badge MUST be returned to your host at the end of each day to avoid penalty. Please understand that all Tournament policies, signs, verbal instructions of Tournament Officials, and traditional customs of etiquette, decorum and behavior should be observed at all times. ANY official of The Augusta National Golf Club is qualified to judge improper behavior and violations of club policies. When deemed necessary, your badge will be confiscated and you will be escorted from the grounds. The Badge number in your possession will be reported to committee officials in such instances and the original Badge owner will lose ALL future privileges. As a subsequent user of the Badge, you are agreeing to all of the referenced terms and conditions. Following are certain direct recommendations from Augusta National Golf Club.

Etiquette
The Masters Tournament is an international competition and the contestants are considered invited guests. Everyone should be treated with courtesy and respect. Patrons are expected to behave with the utmost dignity and consideration at all times. In exchange for the privilege of viewing one of golf’s greatest spectacles it is anticipated that you will act courteously and display equal encouragement to all participants. Bad manners will not be tolerated. You should be quiet when silence is required, remain stationary while a shot is being executed and adhere to instructions by officials. Players should never be accosted even if they are acquaintances. Any excessive noise or shouting (e.g. You’re the Man!, etc.) will not be tolerated and may result in dismissal. At NO time should you ever go “under the ropes” for whatever reasons -- ONLY use crosswalks.

Autographs
A No Autograph Policy will be enforced on the Golf Course at all times. Signing will be allowed ONLY on the parking lot side of the Clubhouse.

Cameras
Cameras are allowed during the Practice Rounds ONLY on Monday, Tuesday or Wednesday. NO cameras of any kind during Tournament Play. Violation will result in permanent badge forfeiture, removal from the premises and a substantial penalty assessed against your hosting company.

Cell Phones
Cell Phones, Pagers, PDAs and/or any electronic devices are strictly prohibited at all times and will result in the permanent loss of tickets. You may check these items with concierges within the hospitality areas. Violation will result in permanent badge forfeiture, removal from the premises and a substantial penalty assessed against your hosting company.

Format
72 holes stroke play under USGA Rules; Field of approximately 90 Players; field will “cut” after 36 holes to the 44 lowest scores and ties, plus those within 10 strokes of the leader. Gates open at 8 a.m. and, customarily, Tournament play will commence at 8:30 a.m. on Thursday and Friday; 10:30 a.m. on Saturday; and 11 a.m. on Sunday.

Chairs
Folding arm chairs and rigid type chairs/stools are prohibited. The Augusta National offers chairs for sale on the course. Guests may not carry more than two chairs at a time and may not run to put out chairs.

Bags and Purses

HOW TO “MASTER” AUGUSTA DURING THE MASTERS

One does not have to be a golfer to enjoy the Masters. Everyone appreciates the grounds and history of Augusta National Golf Club, but there is a lot to see in and around the Masters when visiting Augusta.

The following are 10 tips for both golfers and non-golfers to enjoy all that Augusta has to offer:

  1. 1.Indulge Your Taste Buds: Experience global cuisine ranging from fine dining and pomegranate martinis at La Maison on Telfair in a beautiful restored 1853 mansion; tapas from around the world at The Bee’s Knees;  a fried bologna sandwich at Joe’s Underground Café; to great soul food at Metro’s.
  2. 2.Walk the River: Riverwalk is a landscaped red brick walkway that is great for afternoon or evening strolls by the Savannah River.
  3. 3.See the “Art” of Broad Street: Artists’ Row offers a wide range of eclectic art and fun gifts in historic buildings along Broad Street.
  4. 4.Do a Pub Crawl: Visit one or all of Augusta’s 22 Pubs.
  5. 5.Shop ‘til you Drop: Shop at the newly renovated Augusta Mall and the upscale Surrey Center.
  6. 6.Take a Walk on the Wild Side: Marvel at blue herons, egrets, otters and even alligators as you walk across the swamp on the boardwalk at Phinizy Swamp Nature Park.
  7. 7.Say “Cheese” with James Brown: Visit the statue, park, boulevard among the many sites honoring the late James Brown – the Godfather of Rock and Roll. Get your photo taken with a statue of James Brown and then show your friends through the James Brown Cam.
  8. 8.Tour Augusta by Foot: Put on some walking shoes and experience the boyhood home of President Woodrow Wilson along with several historical sites all within walking distance of downtown.
  9. 9.Explore the Outskirts of Augusta: Just a 20-minute drive from Augusta, Aiken, S.C. features horse farms and polo fields, and one of the most charming small downtowns in the South.
  10. 10.Venture Outside the Grounds of Augusta National Golf Club: Check out vendors with Masters memorabilia, golf companies with many free giveaways, free soft drinks and maybe even catch John Daly hawking his signature golf items outside the gate.
